Lucy Meyer Comes to Calvary

Violet Comer and Gwynna Dille - 8th Grade Students

On March 27, Lucy Meyers came to Calvary Christian School to speak to the middle school about living her life with disabilities and the 2015 Special Olympic World Games. Lucy is an 8th grader at Daniel Webster public school in Culver City.  She has had Cerebral Palsy, a condition that impairs the muscle condition, for her entire life, having not had oxygen for 5 minutes during birth.  When she was diagnosed, the doctors told her parents that she might never be able to sit up or be active, but as Lucy herself said, “The doctors were wrong.”

Instead of letting Cerebral Palsy hold her down, she has turned her challenges into an opportunity to inspire people and bring awareness to others with disabilities. Because of what she has overcome and all of her accomplishments, she has a philosophical belief; Lucy says, “Well I don’t believe that you should call people disabled because it suggests that kids with disabilities can’t do things that we know kids with disabilities can do.” Lucy, is a two-time Special Olympic’s gold medalist winner in swimming.  She is also a passionate public speaker for people with disabilities and has met with President Obama on two occasions. She has also spoken with many senators and organizations to advocate for better laws for people with disabilities. When asked what her goal in life is, Lucy replied, “I want to help kids with disabilities and play sports.” She has been working to fulfill this goal by being a Special Olympics World Games Ambassador, as well as an ambassador for UNICEF.

Lucy has extended an invitation to all of us to get involved in the World Games, here in Los Angeles this summer!  She believes the best way for us to get involved is through volunteering to work at the Games, or even just joining the crowds in the stands to cheer on the athletes. There will be over 7,000 athletes competing in the Special Olympics World Games from 177 different countries. We hope to see you there this summer!
