Calvary Celebrates the Start of the 2017-18 School Year!

The 2017-2018 school year at Calvary Christian School kicks into full swing on Tuesday, September 5th. CCS will continue the long-standing tradition of delivering a mission of academic excellence and Christian values preparing all students in preschool through eighth grade for leadership and service.

With over 420 students and 75 faculty members, Calvary Christian School is proud to celebrate the return of its entire administrative team; Vince Downey is returning for his sixth year as Head of School, Marti Willens as Middle School Head, David Ludwig as Elementary School Head, Erin Ahders as Preschool Director, and Leslie Clark as the Director of Admissions and Marketing. Calvary is excited to introduce the school community to two new teachers, Amanda House, who is joining the Middle School Spanish team, and Cristina Garcia to 5th grade.  A new 3rd grade teacher, Tina Jones, is moving into a full-time position on our campus, having previously served as an assistant teacher. Calvary has added two new staff positions this year, with Jennaca Cotton stepping into a role as the school’s literacy specialist, and the addition of Hannah Mulick as an assistant teacher in the elementary science lab.

This summer, Calvary Christian School continued the revitalization of the campus, with an overhaul of classrooms for students in fourth and fifth grades, as well as an extensive remodel of the school offices. The state-of-the-art learning environment supports Calvary’s commitment to provide a stimulating environment for exploration and growth.  In addition, Calvary’s cork in-fill turf sports field was equipped with a new digital scoreboard.

In transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, Calvary continues to place an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), by continually expanding the innovative programs each year, to most effectively teach these subjects. Calvary offers project-based learning opportunities that incorporate technology into classroom instruction, teaching students specific problem solving steps used in the real world. Technology is integrated into learning for students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, as they participate in coding and programming curriculum using robots, drones, microprocessors, and 3D printers. With a one-to-one iPad program in the elementary school, and a one-to-one laptop computer program in the middle school, technology is physically at each student’s fingertips, and thoughtfully integrated into academic learning.

In addition to traditional classroom teachers, Calvary boasts a full staff of specialists, making it possible for all students, kindergarten through eighth grade, to spend time weekly in science laboratories, the performing arts center, and a fully equipped art annex, allowing them to stretch their imaginations and develop creativity. As Calvary recognizes the importance of developing excellent communication skills and provides a multitude of opportunities, at every grade level, for students to perform, speak, debate, sing, and play a musical instrument in front of an audience. In middle school, exploratory classes include Entrepreneurship, Short Film Production, Fashion Photography, Leadership, and Pastry Making, to name a few.

Finally, building on the growth and success of last year’s athletics and winning seasons in many sports, Calvary will continue to emphasize its athletic program and the tradition of highlighting marquee events, such as our Cougar Bowl, each season.
