CCS Turkey Drive: Turkeys Delivered!

On November 19, Calvary Christian School hosted its annual Turkey Drive to collect turkeys for the Westside Food Bank (www.westsidefoodbankca.org), an independent, non-profit organization founded to provide food to social service agencies on the Westside of Los Angeles County. In partnership with Vons and Starbucks, Calvary was able to provide a record 329 turkeys to the organization this year.

“The Westside Food Bank greatly appreciates the continuous benevolence of Calvary Christian School. For four years the school has collected turkeys, and this year is no exception as they've gone over the top with over 300 turkeys, “ said Allison Griffith, Director of Volunteer Services & Extra Helpings Westside at the Westside Food Bank. “This generous gift from Calvary will allow many families the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season.”

New to the Turkey Drive this year and assisting with the school’s record number of turkeys collected, Vons and Starbucks both partnered with Calvary on its philanthropic efforts. On the day of the drive, Vons offered every Calvary family a bulk rate deal on their turkey purchases. Starbucks provided coffee for 200 participants to enjoy as they dropped off their turkeys, making it easier for parents to stop at Vons to purchase a turkey first thing in the morning instead of a cup of coffee.

While the Turkey Drive is an all-school event, and every student and staff member is encouraged to contribute to the drive, the day is organized and directed by Calvary’s 4th grade. As a result of Calvary Christian School’s mission to prepare students for a life of service, the 4th grade class’ service theme is to feed the hungry both locally and worldwide. The 4th grade partners with the Westside Food Bank as well as the Children’s Hunger Fund.

“I’m so proud of our students and grateful for their parents who can band together and respond so powerfully to such a meaningful effort,” said Vince Downey, Head of Calvary Christian School. “Our children, and their parents, have such hearts for service, it makes events like the Turkey Drive and results like we experienced remind us of our honest purpose here.”
