CCS Middle School Performs Romeo and Juliet with a Twist

This March, after only 11 weeks of rehearsals, Calvary Middle School students put on a production of Shakespeare’s beloved Romeo & Juliet. These 14 students elected to participate in the play, which was set to the music of Queen. From “We Will Rock You” to “Only the Good Die Young,” the songs helped tell the tragic story of young love in a new and fresh way.  The actors took the stage and delicately balanced the heart-breaking story with the rock style of music that got the audience humming along with the familiar beat. In the words of Calvary’s drama teacher and director, Lydia Medeiros, “I have always thought that Queen must have written their music with the story of Romeo and Juliet somewhere in the back of their minds… it’s as if they always should have been together. Just like Romeo and Juliet.”  It was exciting to watch her vision come to life, as the audience was captivated by the rich talent on display. Calvary’s students showcased their gifts in theater, music and dance in purposeful and clever ways. A definite highlight of the performance was the rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” which took place in Friar Laurence’s cell, with small edits to the lyrics telling of Romeo’s plight and banishment. With the commitment to celebrating the arts and developing communication skills in students, Calvary’s on-stage presence continually raises the bar in creativity and execution. Bravo to all involved!!
