Calvary Students Explore Creativity as a Means of Service
Community Service is woven into the very fiber of Calvary Christian School. Our staff and faculty are encouraged to creatively approach and model active service to our students, recognizing that service must start with the leadership on campus. Each trimester, in the middle school, students elect exploratory programs that fit their interests. This winter, our Middle School Science teacher, Ms. Dena Walker, offered a course called “Arts and Crafts for Service” in hopes to show the students that service can take all shapes and forms, and is not limited to physical labor and food banks.
One objective of the course is to encourage students to use their creativity to thank and celebrate those who make sacrifices for the greater good. As a practical application of this idea, the middle school students recently visited local Fire Stations 23 and 69, as well as the Palisades Patrol, in order to express their gratitude to these first responders. The students made “Mounds of Thanks for all you Dew” care packages, comprised of Mountain Dew bottles with handmade labels and a pouches, which contained a Mounds chocolate bar.
With this small token of gratitude, our students were given the opportunity to personally thank our local heroes, with a smile and quick face-to-face visit. Over the years, Calvary has actively built relationships with local agencies and organizations, in an effort to show the local community that Calvary is a school that cares and is committed to the Palisades community.
